....So, Guildford’s biggest shopping centre is sure to be a big hit with those who have a love for both!
Family favourite Peter RabbitTM, from the Beatrix Potter books and popular CBeebies show, visited The Friary Guildford to share some of his enchanting stories and celebrate the launch of The Book Base on Wednesday 10th April. Storytime sessions took place throughout the day keeping families entertained and enjoying lots of fun.
The Book Base now open in the Food Court at The Friary Guildford, offers shoppers the chance to borrow, swap or simply donate a book. The aim of this community library is to be a green sustainable local service which enables shoppers, retailers, and local people the opportunity to recycle their preloved books (adults and children’s) allowing others to either borrow it or simply swap it for one they have donated.
Vicky Hickson, Centre Manager of The Friary Guildford, commented, “The Book Base at The Friary is already proving to be a big success with both shoppers and locals alike. The public have been so supportive of this community initiative by already donating more than 1,000 books. Reading is an activity that everyone enjoys, just as much as shopping, so we are confident that The Book Base will prove to be a big hit with both shoppers young and old!” By opting to keep a preloved book in circulation, we are all making a choice which is actively preventing the book going to landfill. And whilst we are unable to undo the emissions from their initial production, we can all do our bit to ensure a carbon neutral future by keeping our old unwanted books from needlessly going to waste after a single use.
So far, we have received over 1,000 books donated by the public, but to keep the shelves of The Book Base fully stocked, The Friary Guildford needs more books that are in good condition for both adults and kids. You can drop off your donated preloved books at The Book Base in the Food Court on level 3 and simply pop them on the shelves or in the boxes provided.
