In Victorian England, ‘genius’ was more typically attributed to men, since it was widely believed that women lacked the capacity for genius on the basis of their sex. Often overshadowed by their more famous husbands, women writers and artists contested this through their professional creative practices and partnerships. Focusing on artists Mary Watts and Evelyn De Morgan, this course will examine their unpublished diaries (which record their artistic ambitions and struggles for success), shed new light on their work, and reconsider them as geniuses in their own right.

There will be a 1-hour break for lunch.
